Oil Filter

I've seen several comments about the "new style" oil filter. Exactly what is it, how is it different, and how can I tell the difference from the "old style" filter?

When I picked up my bike from service last Saturday, the dealer said it had a new oil filter than had a clamp to prevent it from loosening. I haven't looked at it yet.

I think the filter cost about $45....I'll double check the service invoice when I have a chance.

I hope you're not paying $40.+ for an oil filter. I just got mine for $12.00. I also purchased the oil filter wrench that is a cool aluminum piece which cradles the filter and has a hex nut on the bottom. The part # for the filter is as follows: 8000A0810. The wrench #: 800099010. The cost of the wrench was $42.00. The filter has the black nylon strap held in place by a tightening screw, which in turn backs up against the motor to prevent it from rotating loose.

Does K&N make a filter for the MV? Maybe I should research this...

I have an MV one on there now, but I safety wired it so it isn't going anywhere. I bought a wrench that fits on the end as if it was a huge nut to tighten it. It's not ideal, but it works. I had to bend the wrench to make it swing far enough to get a whole "flat" of turn so I could continue.

The K&N ones have a nut on the end that's about 17mm or so (don't remember) but it's already drilled for wire. Very nice, very handy. And they are not expensive either, maybe only a few bucks more than the equivalent Fram or whatever (I'm talking for the R1, not the MV).

K&N do not make filters for MV, either air or oil. I spoke to them and they have no plans for them. However, if they get enough requests, they may decide to make them.
