books to read on pedagogy

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Everything About Teaching and Learning the Piano : One Thread

I am hoping to begin teaching a few students this year. I would like to read some books on how to start with beginners. Do you have any recommendations of books that you particularly like?

Four sources come to mind:

(1) A website named The Piano Home Page has tons of teaching-related pages (teaching, learning styles, business of teaching, practicing, teachers' problems, an ongoing Q & A. Quite an extensive site.

(2) A website named The Piano Education Page. You need to know about this one also.

(3) A website named practicespot.com (huge site) has within it a special teacher's section dealing with many aspects of teaching.

(4) A book (424pp) entitled "The Well-Tempered Keyboard Teacher", by Marienne Uszler, Stewart Gordon, and Elyse Mach, copyright 1995. Again, covers a wide range of teaching issues. Part 3 of the book discusses the Elementary Student in 3 chapters: Chapter 3: The Pre- School Student; Chapter 4: The Average-Age Student; and Chapter 5: The Adult Student.

Subscribe to Keyboard Companion. There is a wealth of info on teaching elementary and intermediate level students in this quarterly magazine.

Teaching beginners is the hardest job, I think. You might want to start with some students who have already had at least a year until you get your feet wet.

Consider enrolling in a course on piano pedagogy. I think you will find it tremendously helpful (if it is well taught).

" Practical Piano Pedagogy" The definitive Text for Piano Teachers and Pedagogy Students. Also, join a local MTNA piano teacher assoc. Good luck, Annelie
