As far as I can tell, "Eldorado" is about the transience of life, mortality.. all that good stuff. The errant knight searches for the mythical city of Eldorado as anyone might search for fulfillment in an activity or life-decision, but in the end, there is only death and passing. The fullfillment comes from the journey, not a tangible arrival to a place or goal. The shadow accompanies us through life as a mark of time passing (through sunshine or through shadow) aging (and o'er his heart a shadow) and finally it is the shadow of Death and we die never having found our personal cities of gold.
