The Church's current position - which is a matter of "discipline" or regulation, not doctrine, and therefore could be changed - is that married men are not normally ordained to the priesthood in the Latin Rite of the Church. In the Eastern Rites, married men can be ordained. Once ordained, a priest cannot marry in either rite. There are some married Latin Rite priests, who are usually married Anglican or Episcopal priests who have converted to Catholicism, and were subsequently ordained as Catholic priests.

contentious subject perhaps, but do you think that, had the Catholic clergy been married, the reaction to the initial discovery of paedophiles in th Church might have been different. in the UK and Ireland, paedophiles were sheperded to other dioceses were they were thought to be beyond harm; and they just carried on. with all due respect to those that do not have a child, i have to say that the thought of a peadophile living within a 1,000 mile raduis of my baby makes me feel sick. now that's just one rather extreme example. in general, and given the original reasons for celibacy have expired, why is this such a problem especially as the number of new priests has fallen dramatically. europe is now importing priests from africa.

Maybe somebody might want to ask how vocations are doing in the Episcopal Church, or the Methodist church or whatever church that allows for married ordained clergy. These churches also ordain women for clergy. All church organizations are experiencing a lack of vocations. In our culture of selfishness, the gift of self is becoming less prevelant. Marriage now carries a 51-52% divorce rate. Fidelity and the gift of self has to change before a so called "Vocations crisis" changes. We may look at the USCCB vocations website page for further info. It may be enlightening to know that vocations in the Catholic Church particularly in the US has increased in the past 10 years. Please pray for vocations. Encourage vocations especially for young people.

ps. Pedophilia is 3 times more prevelant in Married people! Celebacy does not breed sexual problems...it is the refusal to deal with our own personal sexual development that allows sexual problems to go untreated.

Jmj

Thank you, Patrick, for this and your other recent contributions.
Welcome to the forum!

It was interesting to me that you encouraged us to pray for people to respond positively to the (religious and priestly) vocations that God has given to some of them -- interesting because I was just thinking yesterday that you may be a seminarian yourself.
Have I guessed correctly? Are you studying at St. Meinrad Seminary, as your e-mail address suggests? Or are you a Benedictine monk at the Archabbey there? Regardless, I wish you congratulations and thanks!

God bless you.
John
