Mt Airy Shops

Does anyone know where Mt. Airy was on the Petersburg railroad. It is between somewhere between Petersburg and Stoney Creek. The shops were located there in the early years. Thanks. Eric Corse

The Mt Airy Shops built by the Petersburg Railroad were just outside of the Petersburg city limits at the time of construction, but after annexation by the city, the property was within the corporate limits. The shops were on the segment of the Petersburg RR line between Washington St and Virginia Ave. and at the end of Wesley St. If my memory serves me, there were five yard tracks that could be seen looking north from the Virginia Ave overpass. All of tracks were abandoned years ago. The Petersburg RR constructed the shops to build and repair cars and a roundhouse to service its engines. The roundhouse was located on the west side of the rail line according to old city maps. This property now is a residential development off of Lee Ave.
