Looking for photo, circa WWII, small boy hugging new shoes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dirck Halstead : One Thread

My wife saw a print in LIFE magazine and fell in love with it but we cannot find it. We believe that the photo was by Alfred Eisenstaedt. The subject was a small boy holding a pair of shoes after the war. The small boy's face was aglow with joy and gratitude.

Can anyone help me identify the title and photographer?

I've also been looking for this picture for years. Are you sure it was LIFE magazine? I've looked for it there, as well as LOOK.

I've had suggestions about Eisenstadt, but I have not been able to find it under him. If you find out, please let me know.

The picture of the little boy was of a 6 year old orphan from Austria and the shoes were given to him by the Red Cross. It was taken by Gerald Walker and can be seen on page 190 in "The Best of Life". Hope this helps you.

Thank you so much for this thread! I have been looking for that photo (I believe it is titled "New Shoes") for years.

Here is a direct link to the small version Don kindly pointed out: http://www.redcross.org/museum/images/jrcshoes.jpg

Has anyone found a large version on the web?

I'm also looking for this photo. It was definetely a LIFE Magazine photo as both my sister and I remember it well from the magazine. It's a shame that it does not seem to be available anywhere.

Or does anyone know where a full-size print can be found? It's amazing that so many know of this photo, yet we still aren't able to find it. Hopefully we will in the coming year. I shall continue to search and will post any information I might find.

Here is a large (873kb) version from page 190 of "The Best of Life": http://www.pphost.info/dir/184newshoes.jpg

It was taken by Gerald Waller (not "Walker").

A thumbnail-sized version can also be found at: http://www.centralstarkcounty.redcross.org/uploads/images/Austria_1946.jpg

as part of the following article: http://www.centralstarkcounty.redcross.org/?zone=&id=22&sid=

Enjoy!
