Visit the website for the APA division of military psychology at http://www.apa.org/about/division/div19.html their journal, Military Psychology, will most likely be a good source for initial material. You'll find a history of the division in Volume V of Donald Dewsbury (Ed.) Unification through division: Histories of the divisions of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2000).

Here's a good place to start on the general history of military psychology: Driskell, J. E., & Olmstead, B. (1989). Psychology and the military. American Psychologist, 44, 43-54. It's a nice review and has references to the larger body of literature.

There are chapters on combat stress and noncombat stress in Gal, R., & Mangelsdorff, A. D. (Eds.) (1991). Handbook of military psychology. Chichester, West Sussex, England: Wiley. There also are seven chapters on clinical and counseling applications in the military. This work is very comprehensive, but is a little hard to find.
