Doula at waterbirth

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Doula.Com General Discussion : One Thread

I am attending a waterbirth very soon. I am still going through the process of being certified through DONA. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what comfort measures I can use during a waterbirth?

When the women I'm supporting are laboring in water, most of the time I'm nearby giving them my attention, providing encouraging words every now and then. This helps them to feel supported, that they're not alone. When things are difficult or for a change of pace I massage where it makes sense, shoulders or lower back, while the woman is still in water, tub or shower. A change of clothes is nearby if needed. Position changes within water also help.
