How Does FTP Really Work and Is It Safe? (From Viruses and other crap)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Animes : One Thread

I've seen so many downloads with FTP but I don't want to download an FTP program that'll screw around with my computer settings and that has spyware or adware and other shit like that. Is there any way besides ftp leeching programs that would let me download files via FTP?

I usually just use Internet Explorer when I have to get something from an ftp but people rave about CuteFTP. However most ftps suck and are slow as hell so I don't use one unless I have absolutely no choice.

How do you use FTP with Internet Explorer?

Just type the ftp address up there like ftp://username:password@blahblah:(port number). Some people say IE doesn't work for certain addresses but I haven't had any trouble so far.

Well with IE, you can't see the commands that your PC is processing. With progs such as SmartFTP of CuteFTP, you can.^^

You can also try your build in commandline FTP client http://www.somewhocallme-tim.net/teknohelp.html ,but there is no reason since IE works fine for ALL servers, only it does not properly support UL/DL resume. I would not recommend using CuteFTP, dunno if it has spyware, but it can cause a lot of problems if you donŽt configure it properly. Maybe youŽll find a good, (spyware) free, and easy to use client here: http://sourceforge.net/

That may be so but I've never needed to see the processed commands to be able to dl successfully so it has never bothered me.

I cant seem to get it... If I have this address for an anime episode (Neon GEnesis Evangelion Episode 02):

ftp://152.7.26.229/tvp/eva/nge02.zip

How would I access it with IE? Do I need a username and password? cause I heard you could use Anonymous for most things. and where do i enter the actual file name? (Sorry If I sound Completely Illiterate, but this FTP concept doesn't seem very practical to me...) Please help.

You don't necessarily need a password (just type in 'guest') if that's how your FTP rins, but you do need a username. So yes, using anonymous for your username and password is okay^^.

ftp://anonymous:anonymous@152.7.26.229/tvp/eva/nge02.zip:(port #) I'm pretty sure that usually the port number is 21. Your format was correct, I think.

Here's an example from a200a.com:

--------

ftp://a2kaftp:1qwer3@192.188.244.187:333/Hack%20Sign/Hack%20Sign%20-% 2005.avi

-----

(The %20 thing means a space)

Well, for the ftps that don't work with IE, you can try the getright browser. It always seems to work for me.
