The Purpose of the Ghost

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet : One Thread

Hello, I hope some of you could assist me in formulating a thesis -

With regards to the supernatural in HAMLET, what would you say is the purpose of the Ghost? Would you agree that it was to serve as Hamlet's rational conscience, the initiator of the tragedies within the play? Thanks!

Have a look at the question in this forum, "the role of the ghost in Hamlet (dalianoaman, 2002-03-20)". I reckon it is human traits that initiate the sorrows in the play, not the Ghost. Nor is the ghost anything abstract, like a conscience. It is, and is meant to be, a genuine character, with its own personality and its own ideas, values, emotions and desires.
