My wild ride today in the hound wagon

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Cant recall if I had posted this here or not, I built a dog wagon a few months back. I was able to train both of my dogs to lead team nicely and pull the modified Radio Flyer wagon that my ex left behind here. The dogs can easily pull around 250 pounds safely with traction boots and sled harnesses. Much easier for me than using a wheelbarrow and the dogs seem to like helping out.

Today , I rigged a lever brake on it and put a bench seat on the sideboards and hung a dog treat on a stick and rode my dogs around the yard. The steering still leaves a bit to be desired though :>) Pretty soon I had an audience of neighbors and a couple cars parked on the side of the road out front watching me. One fella even asked to see the harness design and I explained to him that it was a modified dog sled harness and advised him to be sure to check with his vet to make sure his dogs were capable of pulling a cart.

I think I may try to get a couple of bullmastiff pups for my next team of working dogs .

Sounds like a wild ride, Jay...and probably quite funny :-)!!

Check out this info. Dogs can pull LOTS more than 250 lbs. and you don't need bullmastiffs to do it! We had an Alaskan malamute several years ago and we tried to get him involved in pulling...anything!! But,being very stubborn, he wasn't interested. So we opted for showing him instead.

Jeees I'd payed good money to see that Jay! You are a wonder! How do you turn corners?....Kirk

Turning is the trouble. When I move the milkbone to turn the other dog tries to jump the harness :>) I had to quick step off the bow wow buggy once when a cat crossed the yard. The dogs work the harness better when lead like oxen. Maybe I can open a dog track and have surry races :>)

When my beloved hound doggie was younger *sniff and whimper*, he was just a pistol! And he loved tug-a-war and pulling things.

So ... we used take turns getting drug around by him at my dad's house. We'd get into one of the rolling kitchen chairs, grab the hound's leash and hang on while he drug all through the house.

!! VERY fun. But he's too old to do that now. *whimper*

Your neighbors must get alot of entertainment value from you Jay! That must be a sight to see.

The neighbors all know that I am this way naturally.

Speaking of draft animals I've kinda dreamed about having a burro. I hear they're pretty cheap to feed and pertty handy to have around. You can even ride them.

Maybe someday.
