Composting toilets

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Okay. I was going to put in new septic - well, let's be honest here - REAL septic, as what I have now is basically a pipe that runs down the hill. But it's what everyone here has.

In any case, for complicated reasons, namely that this is a trailer and I am working on permanently installing it but I'm also thinking about building a *real* house up across the ridge in the middle of all those beautiful trees ...

Etc. etc.

For a lot of reasons, I'm rethinking putting a whole lot of money into septic right now and seriously considering just getting a composting toilet.

I know about buckets and sawdust. I'm thinking I want a real composting toilet though. One you buy.

Anyone here have one? What do you think?

We have a portable potty at the house and on the boat. Are they the same as composting toilets?? The portable one at the house is for visiters who would rather camp out in our pasture or those who would rather not stumble downstairs in the middle of the night :-)!!

Why not just get some worms and pit compost it where its coming out now?

I don't have one but have done a lot of research on them and would definitely install them if I was building. A good one will cost you from 700 to a thousand bucks but that's a lot cheaper than a septic, where around here they'll set ya back ten to twenty thousand! I like th whole concept so much better than the american idea of using all that water, and the environmental effects now or down the road, whether it's an urban sewer system or a septic.

Worms? NO WAY!!~!

I'm also kind of looking at those portable potties. At this point, I've dfinitely decided to do it, and now I'm trying to figure out which one AND more importantly, greywater management. !!!

Which is looking like it might be a lot more complicated than figuring out which composting toilet to get. !!!

worms and a mini wetland do it all.

Linda, from what I've read on composting toilets, trying to research them is kinda like trying to learn Nucular Physics on the net. Each one is, of course, the best. Good luck.

Wildman, (still wasting water)
