Don and Betty Martin in their "The Best of San Francisco" 1997, write "Opened in 1910 by one Eddie Shields, the city's last stand-up saloon 'sat down' in the fall of 1986. To the dismay of some purists, bar stools were placed along the brass rail. The management even removed a coup of spittoons to make room."

Good luck in your research.
