Well howdy all,Finally found my way back here again-this time I'm writing down the password where I can find it! Spring is just about over here in North Florida, everything is about planted, all the animals have had babies except the two pigs (due this week)-time for a nice long drink and kick back for a couple of days until the weeds take over. Been here in the boonies for 5 years this October, big change from living on a sailboat in the Florida keys for 20 years. Just wanted to say Hi to everyone and then go read some of the posts I've missed in the last couple of months. You all take care, Daryll in NW FLA

Hey Wildman, good to hear from you- I think you had disappeared last time I found my way back here. Sandy, I'm 78 miles west of Tallahassee and 40 miles north of Panama City. I see Jay Blair and EM are still keeping things hopping. I missed the whole war in Iraq thing-seems like a couple of good hitmen would have been the way to go- all those billions would've been put to better use helpng the homeless ,poor, uninsured, and old right here in the good ole US of A. Kirk, How's your stone house coming? Well, time to feed the animals,Daryll in NW FLA

Hi there Daryll! Now you're gettin us northerners jealous talking about all your garden in already! Its not safe to plant much of anything here yet! My folks just got back from spending two months in FL; they love it down there in the winter.

Hi Daryll!! Oh my God!! Living on a sailboat? Maybe when you have time you could let us know how that was!

My walls are done on the bathroom and kitchen and I'm working on the concrete roof! Soon as my son shows up with his camera I'll post some pictures....Glad your back ....kirk

Kirk, I'm just askin, but is a concrete roof a good idea in earthquake country? :) ouch

Hi Kirk, Living anchored out on a sailboat is something you do in your 30's and 40's when I hit 50 I decided to try another of my dreams before I got to old to cut the mustard. Years of pulling up that 150 pound anchor and rowing 1/2 a mile in and out everyday just got to be more trouble than the lifestyle was worth- not to mention that the rules and regulations kept getting way past the point of a total police state. I had a small herb garden(legal) on my boat, but the Coast Guard and Marine Patrol Nazis loved to search and hassle anyone that looked like they might be enjoying life. Well, got to go - thunderstorm coming this way. Take care, Daryll

All re-enforced concrete EM. Regular wood rafters with a 8 inch grid re-bar. All the re-bar is connected. foundation into the slab up the walls and into the roof. One ball of steel rock and concrete all hooked together.

I had to laugh because we had a 5.5 quake last year so I raced outside with my magnifying glasses and checked for cracks and falling rocks. Nothing!!! Clean livin wins again!!!!.....Kirk

Clean livin! Here here! :)

I know nothin about construction, but I was under the impression that the safest thing for quakes was a design that wasn't rigid, but had some give. But maybe that's just for big, multiple floor buildings.

I sure would love to see your place when you get it done; I just LOVE stone buildings!
