DCC Start-UP

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Wiring for DCC : One Thread

We are in the process of building a new layout from the ground up! And are looking for some advise and suggestions as to which of the Digitrax systems to start with. Our thinking is to go with the Super Chief, there for taking advantage of the expandability of the system. Any and all information and secrets will be greatly appreciated!

We are new to DCC!

HELP!

Questions like "which system should I buy?" are difficult to answer over the Internet. There are too many variables. You get someone's opinion that may not be right for you. (this is meant for anyone casually reading this message).

Your question is more specific. You appear to have decided on a manufacturer and appear to be only asking about whether considering expandability should be something for you to consider. In that case, I will say that I generally suggest that people lean towards expandability if they can afford to do so. So many simpler systems end up on e-Bay.

For the general public reading this, I suggest: 1. That you get literature from all the manufacturer's that you think you might buy from. That's what I did! You may not understand everything. That's okay. Those things you don't understand are things to ask questions about. Don't ask, "do I need this?" You will get someone's opinion. Ask, "What is this?" Then decide if that is a feature you need OR MAY WANT IN THE FUTURE. 2. If you don't intend to take your THROTTLE anywhere, stop reading. If you want to share throttles, like visit a friend or club's layout, then your decision may be heavily weighted by what these other people have. Note: This only applies to THROTTLES! Decoders are generally interchangable between systems. So if you only will be taking your locos to a club or friend's house, you can have any system you want - simple or complex - it doesn't matter.
