Did Alexander really murder Cleitus?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Alexander the Great Q&A Forum : One Thread

My gut feeling is this is just a stupid story just to make Alexander's young death understandable. The Greeks were certainly into tragedies a lot. The story of the murder of Cleitus just seems to be an echo of other equally stupid stories the Greeks and others came up with. I have no doubt that Cleitus was wounded by Alexander in a heated argument, but come on, can anybody be so stupid as to run a good friend in with a spear?

Yup he did all right. He was drunk and according to most books Cleitus was appraising Phillip Alexs father whom he hated. Alex got into a terrible rage and killed the man.

yes, actually he did. Every single book I have looked at says that he did. Although the greeks DID like tragedies alot, I highly doubt they would make something like that up!
