An Important PBS Special Program

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

Starting next week PBS will begin airing a six part series called "This Far By Faith: African-American Spiritual Journeys". The specific dates are June 24, 25 & 26. The series examines the evolution of African-American religious themes over the last three centuries. Religious personalities like Denmark Vessey, Henry McNeil Turner, Elijah Muhammad, Adam Clayton Powell, M.L. King, Jr., and others are chronicled. Times may vary according to your local PBS station. The project is produced by Blackside, Inc. and The Faith Project. If you would like to learn more about the series and how you can play a role in this project please visit the PBS website at www.pbs.org (can someone please do a link to PBS?) and click on the preview link of upcoming events. I'm looking forward to the broadcast of this program and discussing it with others. QED

I've seen two of the episodes so far. The program is very informative and has helped me to understand the relationship between the church, politics, and social issues. I think it comes on at about 7p.

Thanks Sis. Imani for the link. I saw the program each night and decided after last night I will purchase the set for my local church school. The spotlight on Bishop Turner, Thomas Dorsey, Cecil Williams and Wallace Dee Muhammad was particularly well done. While I thought there was an overdependence on James Cone for commentary and perspective, and a lack of development regarding the Million Man March & the role of the Independent (non-denominational) Movement in black Christianity, overall, the program met my expectations.
