If we judge purely by what he said about himself, then -yes- Alexander thought he was a god.

It is safe to say his godhood inspired mixed feelings among his people. They associated that sort of thing with Oriental despots. On the other hand, having a god among one's ancestors was pretty common in Greece and Macedonia, and Hercules became a god after being a man, so the idea wasn't entirely laughable.
