John Seymore

Well there is an old homesteading book I have been looking for that i didn't know the name of. Someone on the old Countryside list suggested it might be a John Seymore book. I just ordered the one that I thought might be the one, but though it cost me nearly $30(This by the way was a great deal. I have seen the book going for $60 in other places.), it is not the right book. The book I am looking for was in 10 x 11 format. What made the book so absolutely fantastic was that it had wonderful drawings of how to arrange a homestead on various small acreages. This guy was also big on draft animals, one animal following another for harvest, intensive gardening, and many other things. I am glad I bought the Seymore book, which is by the way, "Farming for Self-Sufficiency Independence on a 5 acre Farm" by John and Sally Seymore 1973. It does have very good information. It is just not the one.

John Seymour Books are available used and cheaper (if your not in a hurry) at www.half.com and www.abe.com or www.fetchbook.com

Which book were you looking for? I have a bunch of his stuff and enjoy his writing style. Get me a title and maybe I can help you find a cheap copy of it. I have gotten better at finding books in the last few years. I use the wish list option at abe and half.com and set the parameters to the price I can afford. It takes a while sometimes.

The book you are describing is John Seymour The Guide to Self Sufficiency. ISBN 0-910990-66-2

It has 1 acre and 5 acre farms. I found my copy at the library sale for $1 :>) 256 pages of good info. Im using the brickmaking section to build a barbeque from at hand materials.

Thank you Jay! I will look it up. I am impressed with the one that i bought, but really want the other one too. I just wish seymore books weren't so expensive. However, I am finding they are certainly worth it.

This doesn't sound like the book you were looking for, but "The Self- Sufficient Gardener" is another good book of John Seymore's. It is in the large format though.
