Seems to me that God gave us the ability to play beautiful music and he ordained it to be a major driver of worship. As evidence, I submit Rev 14:2 as well as the following:

Ps:33:2: Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.

Ps:43:4: Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.

Ps:49:4: I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

Ps:71:22: I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.

Ps:98:5: Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

Ps:147:7: Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God:

Ps:149:3: Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.

Ps:150:3: Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

But what do you tell someone who insists those passage no longer have authority on us because they are from the Old Testament? (i.e. church of christ member)

tell them Mike the story of david dancing in front of the ark (i Samuel . David used to play for God.6:14-15. Add the psalms (since they are songs). Quote them Jesus saying in Luke 7:31-35. here jesus doesn't prohibit dancing and music (like John the baptist did).

Jesus even attended weddings (see John ch.2).So he was not a person like those monks in the desert who thought, like saint anthomy, that they can only find God in solitude.

You don't Mike. The Church of Christ is very legalistic I'm afraid. It's what we in Charismatic circles refer to as a "religious spirit", the attitude of the Pharisees. It's not unlike the Amish and their restrictions on just about everything. I've been in arguments/discussions over this subject with a CoC person, it's a tough nut to crack and one probably not worth trying.

My suggestion is to pray for the person - maybe God will work on their heart.

Hi Mike, first off I wouldn't spend too much time arguing with such a nonsensical take on worship, let alone such a skewed view of scripture interpretation. The revelations of John prove how glorious and magnificent the echos of worship of the elders and angels in the Heavenlies are.

Rev.5:8...."each of the elders held a HARP and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the holy ones, they sang a new hymn:..." and so goes the resounding praises and glory of the Lamb that was slain.

If we so will give Him worship in Heaven, how awful to belong to a church that doesn't give us a foretaste of this worship here on earth. Theresa

hi David! good to hear from you! Would you mind telling me some of the going's on of the Holy Spirit in your area? He's really pouring out in Nor. Cal. Theresa

I think they are crazy, they think that any Catholic or Protestant is going to hell because they don't "obey the gospel"

Tubas are OK, kazoo's are not (unless they are performed with due decorum).
