National Committee on Scouting Membership Initiative

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

The National Catholic Committee on Scouting and the BSA launched a membership initiative in July 2002. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to bring a quality Scouting program to more Catholic youth than ever before.

The NCCS goal is to have 10,000 Catholic-chartered units by 2005.

The Roman Catholic Church has used the Scouting program since the early days of the Boy Scouts of America. It is one of the most extensive users of the BSA program. There are more than 350,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers in more than 9,600 packs, troops, and crews under Catholic auspices and an equal number of youth members in other Scouting units. Scouting is used in about one-third of the parishes in the United States.

Thanks for the information Bill. My son earned the Parvuli Dei religious award as a cub scout, and will be earning the first of two religious awards for Boy Scouts this winter.

I am a firm believer that the Boy Scout program, when properly delivered, is a huge benefit in the development of proper character for boys.

Also, when combined with the religious awards, the program helps teach the tenets of one's faith. Unfortunately, not enough boys pursue these awards.

I was a cub, weblo, and eagle scout. I recently heard that the Pennsylvannia United Way has cut $400,000 from the local BSA council for staying true to Scouting and rejecting homosexual scouts and scoutmasters....

I'm going to send that Scout council a donation and letter commending their courage for standing up to those who would strip a free organization of its constitutional rights to freedom of association.
