If I recall my history correctly, the Romans first pegged him with that name due to his deeds. Yes, others were considered to be of great achievement, such as Cyrus, etc. And in nations such as China, Egypt and India, men and women of great power and foresight were achieving magnificent things. Africa, too, had huge kingdoms. The big difference was the size of Alexander's empire at the time, and the fact that history was written by the victors and/or those who became dominant.. they wrote what they knew, thus the Romans wrote about ALexander. Historical revision to suit modern political/national agendas do not always reflect truth- we've seen how revisionists change history to reflect their own needs (Hitler's Nazi party tried, writing the Jews from German history). Though history *can* be corrected (as in writing things from the point of view of invaded nations, or giving credit for inventions back to the minorities and women who actually did them, etc), it should not be altered because of nationalistic fantasies. Alexander was Mekedonian, but that is not to mean he was from the Macedeon of today- nor modern day Albania, China (as one person claimed) or anywhere else. He was Makedonian, though of mixed blood, from ancient Makedon, based in the region of Pella, Vergina, etc. We might try taking a hint from this and realize that his blood was meant to *unify* not divide.. Philip married to create bonds and solidify alliances, not to go to war with his neighbours.

Well, the macedons were an illyrian tribe and at that time Macedonia's name was IMATHIA which means in albanian " the great"
