Fall work

What kind of fall projects do you have planned? Most of mine revolve around the fall garden and putting the summer one to bed. I intened to make use of the cooler weather. In fact, I'm looking forward to a break from this heat.

Same as the spring ones, only in the greenhouse under UV lights. :>) Outdoors I will be layering leaves in the 20 worm beds .

Jay, how do you keep the snakes from getting in your worm beds? Or do you not have a problem with them where you live??????????????

Fall projects--trying to finish all those that I'd started this spring and summer! I've pretty much given up on the garden. We've had so much rain, and got such a late start with the summer weather. I picked my 1st cherry tomato today, and I have my 1st zucchini-it is 2 inches long. I've never had such a dismal garden. I have a chicken coop and shed that have been in the initial phase of construction for months. One foot in front of the other, right? A year ago I was living in the city, waiting to close on this neglected 5 acre hayfield.

That is right Daisy! Trust me when I say, that the best thing is to get up each morning and make an ounce of progress. Sometimes it has to happen in baby steps, but the glory of homesteading is looking back at what you've accomplished, and looking forward to what can be accomplished. For instance, this year I grew heirloom hulless oats. Now I know next to nothing about oat growing. However, I planted them right along with my garden. I found out later that was a little too late. The stand I got isn't that great to speak of, but I plan on harvesting and threshing today. I'm not even sure that I will get back all my seed. However, I will get some. I went down there a few days ago, and pulled a grain out. It was still a little on the doughy side, but whole, healthy, beautiful, and it tasted just like oatmeal. God-willing I will have enough for a crop next year.
