same sex marriage promoted by government of Canada

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

The liberal government of Canada plans to push through same sex marriage laws allowing homosexuals to marry. I know what the Bible says about this and the church. This liberal government in Canada is making a mockery of marriage and the church by proceeding with this adgenda. Will the church take a stand against this evil government by excommunicating all church members who go on record in support of this ? Can you forward the suggestion of excommunication for these godless people who claim to be good Catholics yet insist on voting for this change.

Amen William. Excommunication it most certainly ought to be, but will probably not be. Its all in the Pope's hands; but he's too busy praying for rain in Europe and canoodling up to the Russians who keep throwing it all back in his face.

God Bless and Guide our Pope.

To Ian,

I find of particularly bad taste, not to say *very* un-Catholic, to joke with the heat and fire wave that some European Countries are suffering ...

Cheers from Portugal

They're ALLOWING it. There's a big difference between allowing something and promoting it. It's not like the Canadian government is having infomercials that say "Bored with your life? Why not marry another dude!" They're simply saying "Whatever, it's not hurting anyone. Do whatever you want."

Then again, if it didn't hurt anyone, God would not have condemned it. The only actions God has identified as sin, and forbidden, are actions which damage us. That's what sin is all about.

And again...biblical qotations where God supposedly condemmned gay marriage? Even if it says so in the bible (which no one has shown), that doesn;t neccessarily mean God said it. Keep in mind that, regardless of the divine inpiration that may or may not have gone into it, the Bible was written down by MEN. Men make bad choices sometimes. Men put things in the Bible that reflected their times. There is a passage in the Bible that says slaves should always obey their masters. Does God condone slavery?

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals ..." (1 Corinthians 6:9)

"and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching ..." (1 Timothy 1:10)

"For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error" (Romans 1:26-27)

Keep in mind that, regardless of the divine inpiration that may or may not have gone into it, the Bible was written down by MEN.

MAY have gone into it? And you (a fallen-away Catholic) call yourself an Episcopalian Christian, yet you're not even sure if the Bible is the inerrant Word of God? You are no better off than an atheist.

Men make bad choices sometimes.

No bleep, Sherlock -- such as your choice to leave the Church that Jesus founded. Such as your choice to support Vicky Gene (and females) as "bishops." Such as your choice to push for sodomy. All of 'em are BAD choices, baby!

Men put things in the Bible that reflected their times.

Well, what did you expect -- that they should put in things that would reflect OUR times? Regardless of what they wrote, the primary author was the Holy Spirit -- God -- resulting in the Bible being free from error and not teaching anyone to sin.

There is a passage in the Bible that says slaves should always obey their masters. Does God condone slavery?

Actually, St. Paul says similar things at least twice:
"1 Timothy 6:1 -- Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be defamed."
"Colossians, chapter 3:22 -- Slaves, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing the Lord."

However, this does not mean that God condones "chattel slavery," wherein the slave is considered the property of the master. Some believe that St. Paul was referring, not to "chattel slaves," but to people who were the "indentured servants" of the time. [17th century indentured servant = a person who worked without wages, usually for a period of five to seven years, in exchange for payment of the person's passage to the American colonies. The contract, called an 'indenture,' entitled the servant to food, clothing, shelter, and medical attention.] But even if one argues that St. Paul was referring to "chattel slaves," his words must not be interpreted as approving of any injustice, but only as exhorting Christian "slaves" to obey "masters," since the alternative (insubordination or flight) would result in death and disgrace to the Church.

Speaking of "slavery," the greatest of all forms of it is your own attachment to sin -- and that of the sodomites you are defending.
