there was a lot of chance involved in the matter of Alexander winning so many initial battles before he had collected enough to finance a large army

Philip did the planning. Alexander did the implementation. Although Philip laid the ground work for Alexander there wasn't much in the treasury of Macedonia when Alexander began his campaign. In fact it was essential that he keep winning and acquiring wealth to keep is army going. What makes him great is that many of the most careful plans fail. Alexander succeeded and did it in a big way.

One small point of correction. The Macedonian army that conquered Asia under Alexander's leadership was created by Alexander's father, Philip. Alexander made good use of it, but her inherited it. The Macedonian army was already the most seasoned, disciplined and formidable army in the world the day Alexander assumed command.

It was Philip who organized the army, adopted the sarissa (long lance) as the main weapon, developed the appropriate tactics, and conquered Greece before Alexander ever set foot in Asia. Had Greece not been conquered, Alexander could not have turned his attention eastward. It is reasonably believed (but not confirmed) that it was Philip who first conceived the idea of conquering Persia and studied how it might be done, but he died before he could begin.

By the time Alexander started, all the groundwork had been laid for his success. These facts don't diminish what Alexander accomplished; they merely give credit to Philip for what Philip accomplished.

He is important because he created an army which took over most of the known world.
