First of, I can understand, your inteligence, isn't very high(AOL??). Let me explain to you, something, that you will find very enlightening. First of, Mr. Jones,(shit, what a crappy alias), the Animation Production Studios, allies with Fansubbers. Here, in Los Angeles, we have the UCLA Anime Club. And we get open arms and a big smile, from the Japanese Animation Production companies. Why?, they don't care if we are, somehow able encode there episodes, and distribute them. Because it is promotion. AS LONG AS THERE IS NO SELLING OF THE ANIMATION, THE ANIMATION PRODUCTION COMPANIES WELCOME FANSUBBING, AND IN MANY CASES SUPPORT IT, AND CONTRIBUTE TO IT. AT UCLA FOR EXAMPLE, THERE IS A TIGHT NITCH BETWEEN ANIMATION PRODUCTION COMPANIES AND THE CLUB. WHY?, BECAUSE, THE BASIC FUNDAMENTAL IDEA IS THAT THE ANIMATION WILL BECOME POPULAR TO A CERTAIN POINT, IN WHICH, A RESPECTABLE, REPUTABLE, DISTRIBUTOR, WILL COME ALONG AND PURCHASE DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS. If we fansubbers betray this mechanism, and start the selling, and destroying the trust, given to us, by the Japanese Animation Industry, were fucked. The'll comlain, and fansubbing will most certainly be hurt, which, most probably will hurt the underground distribution of Japanese Fansubs, in the long run. SO DON'T DO THIS SHIT. FUCK I COULD DO WHAT YOUR DOING, I HAVE ALL THE EPISODES, BUT I DON'T CAUSE IT AIN'T COOL. Peace out.Don't betray the trust, and don't fuck with the underground establishment, and no, the people that copy the episodes of TV, are not doing anything illegal, just like your not doing anything illegal, if you tape your favorite show, with a pre- programmed VCR. I REPEAT, WHAT THE ENCODERS DO, AND THE TRANSLATORS DO IS NOT ILLEGAL, YOU ON THE OTHER HAND ARE COMMITTING A CRIME. I REPEAT, WHAT THE ENCODERS DO, AND THE TRANSLATORS DO IS NOT ILLEGAL, YOU ON THE OTHER HAND ARE COMMITTING A CRIME. I REPEAT, WHAT THE ENCODERS DO, AND THE TRANSLATORS DO IS NOT ILLEGAL, YOU ON THE OTHER HAND ARE COMMITTING A CRIME. bE WEll AND bE wEArY

If ANBU or Saiyaman or any other subber group complains directly to ebay (of course I'll write to ebay too) this stupid, idiotic, moron M. Jones should be stopped selling others work!!!

I'm very greatful for all the fansubbers 'cause of them we can watch great anime other wise we would have to wait years and years for them to get licenced!!!

So M. Fucking Jones do not use others work and put them in danger of stopping the subs!!!!

Oh BTW GO TO HELL M. JONES!!!

At this point, I'm too busy watching The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers to read the whole essays you wrote fucking each other. These sort of posts are hopelessly boring and stupid. Remember, it's an ANIME BOARD.

Farewell.

If you wanna complain about Mr. Jones's shit I suggest you write to ebay and the most popular episodes encoder (Saiyaman, TW and ANBU_AonE) so they can't take actions against this.

Heh... since what the fansubbers are doing is equally "illegal," they're the ones passing these files on to the public in the first place and they have no rights to the pirated material they're distributing, they can't take legal action against anyone.

-- Anonymous, October 01, 2003

The fansubbers aren't doing anything illegal. Did you even read the verbage I wrote especially for you?, and 'ANONYMOUS', you obviously have low healthy reading habits. Shame. As long as their not selling this Show, because they have no right to, there

You idiot, they aren't selling anything. Damn, your really slow. The Fansubbing Community is simply acting as a voluntary promoting agent. In hopes, of a reputable distributor. You are not that reputable distributor, are you. NO, so you have no right to sell this product and profit, from something you did not produce, but simply went through mainstream download and burn, like any one of us. You can't say, "equally illegal", that the fansubbers are committing a crime. First of, you don't commit a crime when you record your favorite TV show, to watch later, nor do you commit a crime, by simply lending it to your friends, or if you were a psycho fanatic, you would probably make tons of copies, and give them away, you still wouldn't be committing a crime. Until you sell, the taped version, then you enter into the "equally illegal" aspect of it. If you copy a song of the net, and you distribute it, the semantics are different, especially if the songwriter, is native to this country. But in this case, the promotion, of anime, depends on independent fansubbers, word gets out, and the ACTUAL distributors, only then take interest in the anime. Due to the underground. To make it easy for you to understand, Take RAge against the Machine, for example. They were underground. You think, an underground band, would get mad, if you distributed there songs?. No. Eventually mainstream media would pick it up, PRECISELY BECAUSE OF THIS. Thus anime, as you see in this case, Naruto, is not Licensed. It will eventually be. True, when licensing takes place, sometimes, the subbing sucks, but depending on the distributor, etc, you will always be able to get a subtitled version. At any rate, the promotion of the inustry depends on this. Just like the underground band, depends, on the promotion of it's fans. Your screwing all this up. This is simply an analogy, and the Fansubbing phenomena, is a whole different beast within it of itself. I hope your able to make some sort of connection. Yes this is a lengthy response. So be it, you just practiced your reading and comprehension skills.

The only thing to "comprehend" from your nonsense is that you like the sound of your own rantings. 16-line paragraphs filled with all CAPS, cursing, run-on sentences and half-thoughts? No wonder "Anonymous" and most other people wouldn't want to waste time reading what you have to say.

And your arguments are weak. Rock bands with little or no funding or exposure of COURSE will welcome any promotion of their work, even if it is through pirated songs. They consider it an even trade-off, since they lack the resources to promote themselves as they'd like. However, once they DO have the resources and backing to do their own promotions, you can bet (as seen over the past several months) that musicians and the companies that own the rights to their songs are more than willing to go after people for trading/distributing those musicians' material even IF those traders aren't making money off of it. It has little to do with people actually making a profit off of the artists' work, and EVERYTHING to do with perceived lost future sales due to the free and easy access to those works through other means (the internet) on a global scale.

Anime companies are the same way. They don't NEED fansubbers to promote their stuff, because they have the resources to do that themselves. And they especially don't NEED people who are going to GIVE AWAY their products to the whole world through the internet, if they plan on selling the anime licenses to distributors here in the U.S. or in other countries. Why would people that interested in anime buy DVDs of a certain show, if they can just download it for free from the internet or get it from one of their friends that did? As with swapped music, it cuts into future potential profits, especially if a domestic distributor picks it up.

That said, fansubbers are tolerated by anime companies because (1) prosecuting them (given the murkiness of international copyright laws and trouble tracking down the fansubbers across international lines) would be both difficult and bad publicity for future sales, and (2) until a company in a given country buys the distribution rights, there isn't enough profit loss to justify such actions. Once those rights ARE purchased, however, it is much easier and more likely for the licensee to prosecute both fansubbers and sellers of fansubbed material under that country's copyright protection laws (as is the case with swapped mp3s).

The fact that the anime companies DON'T actively go after fansubbers hardcore in this country doesn't make what the fansubbers are doing any less illegal. It's merely a matter of convenience for the anime companies and, in general, isn't worth the time, expense and resources to do so.

And if they're not going to go after fansubbers who distribute their stuff to MILLIONS, they're certainly not going to waste time with the odd person on eBay who's making a few bucks, at most, selling medium-quality VCDs of the material the fansubbers are providing in the first place. If they really wanted to stop it, they'd simply stop the fansubbers. No fansubs... no sales of fansubbed material. But due to the reasons I stated above, they don't.

I'm sure you still can't or simply don't want to understand any of this. That's okay. I simply state this for the benefit of those people who ARE interested in using the brains God gave them and not just in seeing their tired monologues on an internet message board.

"... The chances that Japanese animation companies are going to do anything about anyone who distributes their stuff (whether fansubbers or sellers) but doesn't affect their profits is ZERO. The episodes that I'm selling aren't offered in Asia (where Naruto is currently available), so I'm not hurting them one bit. I AM, however, helping them by increasing access to Naruto to people who might otherwise never be able to view this anime, but would like to. ..."

So which is it? Are you helping the anime companies or not? It makes you look bad if you contridict yourself.

-- Anonymous, October 02, 2003

He's just a moron who wanted to make money by selling the work of others on CDs. Now that we're complainning he doesn't know what to say so he's saying anything he can to excuse what he's doing.

How old are you Mr. Jones ? 13 14 ? lol

-- Anonymous, October 02, 2003

Archibald: "So which is it? Are you helping the anime companies or not? It makes you look bad if you contridict yourself."

No contradiction... they're answers to two different questions. The first was in response to the argument that somehow I'm hurting the anime community (while the actions of fansubbers are helping it) and the anime companies and the fansubbers who illegally alter and distribute anime across the world should take legal action against me.

The second was in response to the argument that fansubbing is legal (even though it's NOT) and the anime companies actively encourage it to promote the shows here in America.

Perhaps you shouldn't cut and paste responses out of context from two different message streams. "It makes you look bad..."

Akamaru: "Now that we're complainning he doesn't know what to say so he's saying anything he can to excuse what he's doing."

Your opinion of yourself is much too high, Akamuru. I really don't care much at all about the opinions of hypocrites who trade in illegal anime themselves, yet criticize others who sell it.

And my interests aren't to "help" anime companies (they don't need it), but to provide material already offered on the internet by fansubbers to people who might like to see the anime, but can't... as well as to regain the costs of doing so. If the companies are helped in the process by increased awareness, that's cool too.

Amazing. Half thoughts. Since when have you been able to measure thoughts, Mr. Jones. The concept and ideas, are that matter. I'm sure you can appreciate, that what I state, is not for fun, nor my recreation, nor is it, because, it's joyful, to explain, something, that should be basic and sensical to the average mind. You want to speak, without 'crude' language, so be it. Perhaps, the 'crude' language, throws your mindset off, and makes you unable to perceive, what again should be sensical. Now, let me not write huge columns, to express how ridiculous, your 'reasons' for selling, a laymans acts, concerning those with a computer. If what you do is for the better of the animation industry, then don't sell. You have not bought the rights. You did, contradict yourself. You simply do this, because, you 'know' you won't be tried, and punished. You said yourself. Now, thus, in admittance of your ilegal action. In any court, you my friend, would have fried yourself. Such, a weak defense. But of course, you are not in a court, thus you can afford to have feeble excuses, and self delusions about your acts. And thus the reason why you are wrong.

"And if they're not going to go after fansubbers who distribute their stuff to MILLIONS, they're certainly not going to waste time with the odd person on eBay who's making a few bucks, at most, selling medium-quality VCDs of the material the fansubbers are providing in the first place. If they really wanted to stop it, they'd simply stop the fansubbers. No fansubs... no sales of fansubbed material. But due to the reasons I stated above, they don't."

Did you know, that if you batter your wife, and from our exchanges, I'm assuming your not a 14 year old, simply an adult, with adult like patterns, used for economical gain, with no code. And perhaps married, to an unhappy female. Shame.(By the way, run-on sentences, are used by the most recognized authors, of books, and what not, if you have the fervor of the literary kind, I suggest you apply that same fervor, to your own code of conduct, and venture to explore the myriads of other business practices related to e-bay. You can sell other things, other than pirated goods.)Really.

If your battered wife drops the charges, you won't suffer any penalties other than perhaps, apprehension. So my friend, in this case, your wife would have a say as to whether your are apprehended, or not. And certainly, if she was battered, but denied it, this would fall upon her.

Now the Japanese Animation Production Companies, have not charged, subpeoned, any fansubbers, ever. I did not state the UCLA example, because it was fun. If it is illegal, then you speak only in the context of the Japanese Animation Production Companies having already complained, and this is not the case. Remember your battered wife?. I know, I know, too much for you to understand, and comprehend, simply because you can't. I on the other hand, I can understand your 'reasons', and I can disagree. You claim that I can't. Another attempt to try to measure what is efimeral. I state you can't, simply because, in the context of fansubbing, it is understood, that selling is plain and simple, just dishonorable. So maybe I should shed some blood, because I want a few bucks, hey, if no one catches me, I should be ok, right?. Economic gain, or whatever your reasons, for this dispicable act, is not good enough. I'm sure you can use your time more constructively in getting involved in more edifiable business motions, that would be more profitable, and would yield more, "than just a few bucks".

Whatever. Only fools argue with fools.
