AHGHHHH! My Tomatoes!!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACountryPlace : One Thread

i asked my son to do some mowing around the garden, because my parents are coming and things have grown up where the garden has quit. I specifically asked him to leave the tomatoes alone. You guessed it. He mowed down 3/4 of my tomatoes that all had baby tomatoes on them. I just knew I was going to get a nice second crop. I just want to cry!!!

We're sorry about your tomatoes. You appreciate the help but sometimes you would be better off doing things yourself - unless you are me. I was mowing over the weekend around the new trees planted in the field. I was so proud I was getting around everything (with a borrowed tractor). The next day my husband asked if I meant to mow over my new cherry tree. Sure enough, I cut it about 4 inches from the ground.

Sorry about your tomatoes, unfortunately ours all went last week when it froze here several days in a row. Now it is in the 80's, well that is how things go sometimes here in Wisconsin in October.

Sorry to hear your bad luck. Next year , box store a few. I stripped 10 gallons of green tomatoes from my compost pile volunteers and wrapped and box stored them for winter ripening.

I was up north taking care of my mother-in-law when the freeze hit here. Hubby did cover up a couple, but I sure didn't get put up what I usually do. Jay........what temp do you store them at?? I have tryed that several times and for some reason they always seem to go bad before they ripen. The only success I ever had was when I pulled up the whole plant and hung it upside down in the barn.

I wrap em in paper and put them in an outside wall closet in a bpx that stays at about 55 to 65 degrees. Just rebox em every week and take the ripe ones to the kitchen.
