There's an excellent website on the October 17, 1989 earthquake at http://www.eqe.com/publications/lomaprie/seismici.htm

According to that site, "The epicenter of the Richter magnitude 7.1 earthquake was located about 10 miles northeast of Santa Cruz along a segment of the San Andreas Fault, near Loma Prieta in the Santa Cruz Mountains." This epicenter gave rise to what has become the semi-offical name of the event: The Loma Prieta Earthquake.
