why is it Detroit musicians end up being Catholics or Satanists?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

...my question is this. i know this guy (bernard edwards) who played here in the mid 80's in a band called Corrupt. anyway they were like violent speed metal and satanic in influences with the messages the band portrayed... now edwards is doing a solo thing called bernard edwards project homicide, in the bands debut record there is a song called Mock Imagery. i am confused as to the message of this song. the song says christians are slaves... or sheep to the slaughter. is this still considered satanic in origin or is it more of an 'agnostic' veiw point? the bands website has a page called the asshole page??? http://www.emeraldcityrecords.com/Art/asshole/assholepage.html

anyhow on that page is an anti-Levay button. also it states christians are 'no fun' and ruin all our lives. i'm getting really mixd messages from this. Anton Levay is the leader of the satanic church in San Fransico right? if christians are 'no fun' then why is it edwards is a roman catholic but denies his religion? anyone who might b able to reply about this might make som sense out of it.

Jesus is the son of the Lord. God Bless-

Well yeah, of course, you're touching on something of a direct contact with Satanism here. My suggestion is to do a 180, and walk away from it.

I did a quick search for the lyrics of this song but couldn't come up with anything, but the the pursuit isn't worth it so I quit looking. I'm pretty sure that what you describe is in fact the case, and that if I found the lyrics themselves that they would be pretty predictable. Again, realize what you are coming into contact with and reject it; put it away from yourself, and have nothing further to do with it even for curiosity's sake.

You're right. Leave it at that.

"why is it Detroit musicians end up being Catholics or Satanists?"

Because that's the ultimate conclusion of a man's life. In the end, he is the saved property of God in Heaven or the damned property of Satan in Hell. There is no in between, and all of life gets polarized wildly in it's conclusion.

So choose God and be done with any contact with the Evil One. =)

Christ is to be found in the Catholic Church.

Em,

There is a "in between".

What if the man/Lady has a few thousand years to spend in Purgatory?

-- .Gordon Vinker (Godon@Canada.com), October 19, 2003.

Sure, but that's not really in between, because if a soul finds itself in Purgatory, they've been saved and are destined for the Beatific Vision after their wills are purified of self-love.

For a good description of this state, Catherine of Genoa's revelation on the subject of Purgatory is very helpful. I found some pieces of it here with a quick google search, and I'll bet you can find the whole thing online somewhere if you look for it. If you find it, post a link. It's a pretty short read, but if you want a much improved understanding of Purgatory and how it relates to Heaven and Hell, it'll really put things into perspective.

".. thats not realy inbetween.."

If hell is her here`````````:(---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------And Heaven is here:-) Than the "performer"thinks he must be some where betweeen to pay his debt[s]?

The performer is still living, but Purgatory pertains to what happens to a soul after death.

We live, and while we live, we choose. Upon death, the choices are cast in stone. We live or perish for eternity there on by the choices we make. The choices on the table are only two: death to self and life in God, or the life of self and rejection of God.

So very many opportunities, so much time, and with every breath we exhale we are closer to the immutable. In that sense, life is short and we make the best of it, the best meaning the rejection of the world and its ways, its false gods, its dying rewards.

Hopefully I can take my own advice.

I agree !!

I've seen many black metal bands , and what a fake show they've got !! __ Even most of them , were just a band who only painted there faces , and than they screamed: "we love satan" , but oh boy , ridiculous as they were , a parody on a parody , their guitars sounded like a grinding-machine , and the lyrics , pffffffff !!!! __ I don't know much about satanism , but the same counts for them !!!!

PS:

I saw the Danish King Diamond & Mercyful Fate 2 times , the music on it's own , is ok , the lyrics doesn't interest me !!

When I was in high school Laurent, a couple songs stood out as being direct admissions of Satanism or an explicit devotion to evil; I'm thinking of songs like Back in Black and Running with the Devil. Although they are pretty disgusting in their own right, they're almost humorous in their openness, if it weren't for the fact that what they are singing about are terrible realities.

What's more disconcerting to me in reviewing various lyrics are the more subtle admission of truth and the rejection of it that I see in music lyrics.

One song stands out, and you might laugh, but it's the song from a couple years back called "Closer to Fine" by I think the Indigo Girls. It's the log of a soul who has given up on the pursuit of truth and has resigned themselves to the comfort of the moment.

Imho, this can be far more dangerous in it's own right than Black Sabbath's stark admission of the reality.

Van Halen: Running with the devil (1977) , the B-side of "You really got me" (original by the kinks) , I was 10 years old at that time , but as I said the lyrics are not that important to me , like Annihilator "Alice in Hell" (1986) is a very good song !! __ Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden are 2 of my real favorite bands !!

The Roling Stones , I don't like them , accept for the song Angie , I prefere The Beatles !!

A lot of the hitparade songs handles only about sex & devorces !!

What's more disconcerting to me in reviewing various lyrics are the more subtle admission of truth and the rejection of it that I see in music lyrics.

I know what you mean !! __ For me it's , how they create their music , the feelings , how you create music (style) & why !!

The Indigo girls , I don't know them , but I did a google-search !!

PS: I saw 2 times the osbournes on MTV , hehe , curiousity kills the cat , Ozzy is a crazy good singer !!

Some LPs or EPs , if you turn them backwards , they contain a secret message or a poem , what's your opinion about that ??

So much of that gothic/death metal stuff is just so fake, so repetitive. I used to listen to it, and I quit just because it sucked so bad. You want good music, listen to some punk rock.

You want good music, listen to some punk rock.

and if you want REAL music try andre bocelli, or pavoratti, or even some of the old masters, like mozarts requim.... or mabye nat king cole or ella fitgerald for a newer flavor.

although punk rock can be amusing at times.

Alot of this is simple marketing... there are businessmen who know their market and create bands along these lines: a calculated attempt to attract a niche market of fans. Obviously, those who were Catholic or protestant don't believe their faith but it's useful to claim membership for the shock value.

I don't think alot of what goes on in pop culture is sincere nor do I believe the individuals doing all this are incredibly coherent and intelligent. Most are actors - on stage they act out a theme or character. It's part of the show. Maybe they're "sincere" in some muddled belief but they're also businessmen/women. They're getting paid for this! They have handlers, agents, contracts, lawyers.

Sure, most are simply hedons: sex & drugs, and music. That's their "religion": money and the hedonistic passtimes money can buy.

But don't expect them to be as committed to their message as we are to ours: they aren't going to die or even be inconvenienced for their "message"! Very few of these poor souls carry through with the gospel they preach... Look at Ozzy! A family man! (sure, messed up, but married none the less.)

The point is... take away the drug and sex addiction, take away the easy money and fame...and how many of these people are going to still be committed "satanists"? They don't worship the devil. They use him and religion in general to make money and get the things money can buy. Maybe we should be glad this is so.

The REALLY bad people on this earth are probably not dancing around on stages surrounded by writhing, half-naked women. They sit calmly in board rooms, pace the halls of Congress, sit high on benches creating rights out of "the shadows" of the 14th amendment, etc.

Margaret Sanger wasn't a "satanist" but was arguably much more devilish than any of them, including Lavey.
