New website - Todays Homestead

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Just wanted to let everyone know . . .

There is an offshoot of Chuck Holton's Homesteading Today website called Todays Homestead. I'm pretty sure a google search would turn up the address, but I think it is www.todayshomestead.com. There are a variety of moderators for the boards, and so far seem to be pretty neat folks.

You do have to be a registered user, but no passwords - yet. I've been lurking the past couple of days, and it reminds me a lot of the old Countryside we had before.

Just an FYI.

I just found that one this morning JR. I thought I'd lurk for a few days before signing up.

There's another Homesteading Today offshoot forum called Five Acres and Independence, the URL is http://www.barkerhill.com/phpBB2/index.php

It looks like it's the same people posting at both places.

Okay, I took a look and registered at Today's Homestead. Don't know if I'll post, but just in case... I spent some time last night wandering through my Countryside Archive CD - pretty interesting. I just can't think of much to say here anymore.

Cool Polly. Marcia's over there too. In fact, Marcia's been on every forum I've joined lately. Maybe I'm subconsciously stalking her. hehehehe We can all run amuck together!

Hey Sherri...maybe I'M stalking YOU :-)!! Seriously, though, I did join the new goat forum...after it finally separated itself from Chuck! I've been a "member" of Chuck's forum only because I needed to post for the Maine get-together we all had last summer. Ya know...now that Chuck has "privatized" the General Chat forum over there, I can't even see the pictures of our Maine barbecue anymore!! Bummer! Then, via the WebMaine forum I'm on, I also heard about Today's Homestead and Five Acres and Independence...which I joined 'cause I'd already met Pettie and Dutchie and a few others last summer. Have you signed up for Five Acres yet? Interesting thread going on over there about the Kobe rape trial. I think I'm outnumbered by the men over there!! I swear...it's like trying to talk to chimpanzees sometimes :-)!!

So...c'mon! Let's ALL run amuck and see how many hornets's nest we can stir up! Gee...aren't I getting bold in my old age :-)!

I never go to Homesteading Today. Why are there offshoots? How are they different from Homesteading Today? Are they different?

The same scenario is being played out now as was played out on Countryside Lusenet when Ken was moderating. Its not so much the administration as it is the mix of participants. When I saw the very same catalysts moved to HT in the exodus, I anticipated that the cycle would repeat itself and it did. The Countryside cycle gave birth to a total of 15 offshoots. So far the HT cycle has spawned 7. Its the normal nature of the worldwide web expanding and growing is all. All very interesting to observe. Still the same crew, still the same forum participation attitudes, just more territory after the catalyst cell division as the matrix grows. We really are just "coppertops" :>)

Marcia, try going to the main index page for Homesteading Today and then hitting the refresh button on your screen. That should make General Chat show up in your list again. If not, you can PM Chuck and have him add you back in. It's probably a moot point anyway, they're in the process of switching to the new software and after the switch GC is supposed to be open again.

Joy, the Dairygoat forum split off mainly for logistical reasons. The Homesteading Today forum has been having lots of glitches and hiccups lately and getting on to post is almost impossible some days. People often post to the goat forum when they have a sick animal, waiting for hours or days for the forum to come back up is not a good option. I think someone even had a goat die because of it. ( I have my own opinions about that but that's beside the point) So the Dairygoat forum split off to a more stable server. As for the rest of it, it's the same old same old. The liberals accuse Chuck of deleting their posts and favoring the conservatives, and the conservatives accuse Chuck of deleting their post and favoring the liberals. Meanwhile everyone is crying about free speech and censorship. Some things never change! :)

Actually, I'm finding Today's Homestead to be a bit of a pain. I registered; then my name showed up at the bottom as a new member; and I am on the membership list, but it won't let me log on! So I checked the FAQs - they say to contact an administrator if you can't log on; but, in order to e-mail an administrator, you first have to log on! Hello!! I'm pretty much disgusted with the whole thing. Reminds me of that old song "There's a hole in the bucket"; except it's not nearly so entertaining.

Polly...I had that same problem when I first signed up at Today's Homestead. Very frustrating!! I ended up contacting Dutchie through our Webmaine forum and complained. She "fixed" it and I've had no problem since. Do you want me to get in touch with her for you??

Polly I sent a message to the forum administrators on your behalf asking them to look into it.

Warning: thread drift ahead.

Anyone hear from Kirk lately - those California fires sure look pretty bad. I hope he's located in a safe area. Hey Kirk, if you can read this, please give a holler and let us know your doing alright.

-- Anonymous, October 28, 2003

As far as I know, the fires are all in southern california, east and south of LA. Kirk is in northern cal, northeast of sacramento, not too far from tahoe. right, kirk?

Bren's sister is in Rancho Cucamonga, which is right in the line of fire, and I have an aunt in Escondido who was evacuated yesterday.

Polly, try it now and it should work. Dutchie had to fix you like she fixed Marcia. :)

Thanks!! I just saw the above posts, so I zipped over there to check and I'm in!! Now, I probably won't be able to think of a thing to say! Thanks again!

-- Anonymous, October 28, 2003

Rancho Cucamonga...I love the sound of that, E.M.!! I sure hope Bren's sister and your aunt are all okay!!!! I watched the CBS news tonight and I can't believe the devastation. To lose everything in a fire has to be terrible!! Keep us posted...please!
