Whew...here I am for the first time in ages, and this question pops up (That's what I get for old-fashioned "surfing").

I recently (a week ago) bought a Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400, which at the moment is the highest-resolution (5400dpi, hence the model designation) 35mm desktop scanner available. The scanner has too many useful features to list here, but it's enough to say that, at a street price as low as US$800, this scanner will be at or near the top of the heap for serious - or even frivolous - 35mm scanning work.
