I don't have a reliable source for 1840, but here are some fairly- well documented census numbers for 1842 - 1860:

1844 = 50; 1846 = 200; April 1848 = 850; July 1849 = 5,000; December 1849 = 25,000(!); 1851 = 21,000; 1852 = 36,151; 1860 = 56,802.
