Dome building which allowed the high tide to fill the swimming area.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

A friend has a picture of a building with a dome (for light). At high tide, the water would allow swimmers inside the building to swim. In the picture, I can see women in their long dresses and hats standing at the "spectator" area. A few men are in the water and many more, in their bathing suits are on the same platforms as the women. No one seems to know about it after the 1950's. It is such a fascinating picture. We were all in hopes that you could tell us all about it. Thank you for your time in this matter. CJ Johnson

The only thing it could be in San Francisco is the old Sutro Baths. I don't even know of anything else like a Sutro Baths anywhere in the nation. I don't know of anything like Sutro Baths anywhere in the world but I would think that Greece would be the likely place to have something like it but I don't think it does.

There are several great web sites on Sutro Baths. Try a Google search. For starters, there's a great site at http://www.outsidelands.org/sutro_baths.html
