Left/Port/Starboard/Right

Did anyone notice that just before they hit the iceberg, the command given was Hard to Port. Port is left in naval terminology. The helmsman turned the whell to the right. The next command was hard to starboard, which means right, the helmsman turned the wheel to the left. Did anyone notice this? Thanks for your time!!

Back in those days the steering mechanism was backwards. To turn the ship to port you would turn the wheel to the right(starboard). I hope that sheds some light.
