He Abolished Torture? Why Confusing Statements?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Alexander the Great Q&A Forum : One Thread

Is it true that Alexander abolished torture and cruel punishment wherever he conquered? Many studies about his life seem to indicate he tryed to abolished local cruelty in his kingdome as part as his legacy to humanity, do you agree?

This is a very nice site, but the part about his life is confucing to me... You seem to portray him as an Avatara, a liberator of mankind... Yet you buy into the "OFICIAL" version of his burning and loiting of revel cities and killing and selling into slavery of people... If he was a liberator of mankind, this could not been done by him... Don't you think?

Also, why do you mix him with Jullius Caessar? If Alexander was an Avatara, Caessars was not, it seems... Caessar was a capitalist who started his campaigns when already in his 40s, and not for mankind but for wealth and power... Furthermore, Caessar burned "THE LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA" in order to obscure ancient wisdom and following some (experts say) secret world domination plans... What do you say about it????

While it may be true that Alexander was somewhat less despotic than the rulers who preceded him, he never (to my knowledge) adopted a policy that abolished torture. Nor does it make any sense to consider him as an avatar. Alexander's sense of his own godhead didn't bear much resemblance to the hindu notion of an avatar.
