History of Parkton NC depot and line to Red Springs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

We have received the following request from a non-member. Can anyone assist?

I am a member of the Board of Directors for the Parkton Historical Foundation in Parkton, NC. Our group is attempting to put our train depot on the National Register of Historic places and we are also applying for grants to restore our depot. I need to find information on the history of the depot as well as a description of the standard railroad depot. Our depot was built in 1892 from the best info I can find.

I am also on the Board of Directors for the Red Springs and Northern Foundation. This organization has leased the RS&N line which I know is older than the depot in Parkton. At present, this line connects Parkton, NC to Red Springs, NC. The track has been removed after Red Springs. We are trying to save this track from being sold for scrap. I have been unable to find any history on this line. We are in the process of working on this track with the intention of putting a tourist train (with the possibility of freight service to some local companies) on this line.

Any information you can give me or places I can inquire are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Sally, Nanasees@aol.com
