i was terminated from a bar for giving drinks away. When I went around looking for a job i was told by those possible employers that they were told that by my former bosses that i was a crook and a criminal and that it was in there best interest not to hire me.

Slander is acqusations that are false. In your case it can be interpreted that you were a crook because you were giving away free drinks. In essences you were stealing from your boss which is a crime. Thus, all the things he is saying can be interpreted as true.

I am not a lawyer but the only way it will stick is if you have witnesses that can stand in court for you and point out the person (s) in question in court. and yes then it woule be under law that they did do a crime.
