Response to Symbols of the popes office

The triple tiara was only used by popes from 1314 to 1978 although it does appear on the current pope's coat of arms.

Appears to be a fad for not wearing it. I do wish he would start to wear it again!

silly question but what is the significance of the square cross with rounded ends that appears on the white garment around his neck?

Normally the pope is dressed in plain white with no markings on his clothing. He wears a crucifix on a chain around his neck as a witness to his Christian faith . If you are referring to a crucifix you noticed on one of his chasubles (long sleeveless vest/garment normally worn by a priest during celebration of mass), it could be one of many worn (depending on the design) to remind us of the Holy Sacrifice made by our Saviour. If the crucifix was rounded it is probably what has become known as the “pope’s crucifix”. This crucifix is most prominently displayed at the top of the pope’s crozier (staff) and it’s uniqueness helps in further drawing attention to the event that is at the centre of our faith. This crucifix was designed and created shortly before the pope’s accession to his office in 1978 purposely for John Paul II.

Is this a 'Da Vinci Code' question? 'Cruciform' crosses are discussed in that novel. If so, ask again and I will respond to the question. Otherwise, nevermind ;)
