Can a divorced person partake of the Eucharis/Lord's Supper?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Ask Jesus : One Thread

It seems that Jesus did no approve od divorce.

Mat 5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

Mat 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Also, by what Paul says, it also seems people who partake of the Lord's memorial meal are sinning:

1Cr 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

1Cr 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink [this] cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

1Cr 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of [that] bread, and drink of [that] cup.

1Cr 11:29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

1Cr 11:30 For this cause many [are] weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

To me it seems odd that Jesus would prohibit divorce but not having two wives or more.

His treatment of people was in opposite contrast to his generation.

Of the divorced or living togetther we read when Jesus meets the woman of Samaria at the well and asks her for water: Jhn 4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

Jhn 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Jhn 4:15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

Jhn 4:16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

Jhn 4:17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

Jhn 4:18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

Jhn 4:19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

Jhn 4:20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

Jhn 4:21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

So Jesus offered salvation(a new kind of water) to this woman.

The Eucharist/Lord's Supper is a sort of calling for people who want to be saved.

The best example is the original one: The Exodus.

Exd 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

Exd 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike [it] on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

Exd 13:6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day [shall be] a feast to the LORD.

Exd 13:7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.

Exd 13:8 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, [This is done] because of that [which] the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.

Exd 13:9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD'S law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt.

Exd 13:10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.

Exd 12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I [am] the LORD.

Exd 12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye [are]: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy [you], when I smite the land of Egypt.

Jesus blood( the wine)matches the bood of the lambs, and Jesus body matches the unleavened bread.

People who did not partake of the passover meal were no longer considered Israelites.

I d believe that partaking of the bread and wine keeps us in from falling more into a sinful life.

What Paul was criticizing in I Corinthians was that some people brought food and did not share with others. While others drank too much wine.

In dealing with divorce, Paul again says that Jesus wanted people to stay together,

1Cr 7:10 And unto the married I command, [yet] not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from [her] husband:

1Cr 7:11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to [her] husband: and let not the husband put away [his] wife.

But Paul realized that things are not always perfect, so he left open the door for divorce:

1Cr 7:12 But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.

1Cr 7:13 And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.

1Cr 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

1Cr 7:15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such [cases]: but God hath called us to peace.

1Cr 7:16 For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save [thy] husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save [thy] wife?

I believe if a divorcd person is honest and sincere in reconciling himslf/herself to the body of Christ, then

they should be allowed to hav their divorce finalized

and allowed to participate from the bread and wine.

I can only shed light on the Catholic Position on Divorce and the Eucharist but here goes. Divorce by itself is not an impediment to receiving the Eucharist, because the Catholic Church realizes that there can be an innocent spouse in a divorce (i.e. one who did not seek the divorce). Therefore, divorced people are not automatically barred from the Eucharist. On the other hand, if a divorced person remarries while their former spouse is still alive, they commit adultery and the sin of adultery is what prevents one from worthily receiving the precious Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

My impression is that most Sola Scriptura types deny 1 John 5:16 and consider all sin deadly, so therefore it does matter what sins you may have committed so all may partake. That's just my impression though, I will let them clarify.
