Why do most people call Alexander the III of Macedon "The Great" shouldn't he be called "The Devil"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Alexander the Great Q&A Forum : One Thread

If Alexander was sooooo great then why did he steal from the shrine of Achilles (his role model from Homer's "The Iliad")?, why did he burn down Persipolis after taking all of the Persian wealth (about 70 billion USD nowadays)?, Why did he push his men to the limits utill they refused to go in (in India)?, why did he not send another fleet of boats when returning but cross over back home by the desert, causing 2/3 of his army to die?, Why did he have a siege and kill over 2000 helpless people in doing so??? Why did he do all this and yet have so many people worship him as being "great"???

Please answer soon

The fact is you have to look at why he did these things. He burned down that place because it was Darius' place of dwelling before he died (this was after Darius had fled again) and Alexander was drunk and thinking of all the nasty things Darius had done to his people which included going into one of the hospitals and killing all the sick in their beds! He did not actually start the fire himself it was a kind of build up of people in which Alexander took part. Alexander only pushed his men due to his curiousity. Macedonians did not know what was beyond India would'nt you be curious had you no idea what was round your street corner? Sure he killed but this happens in wars. He had a lust for battles as most kings had in those days, at least he didnt lose them otherwise he would be called Alexander the dead.

I dont agree with you there. I think that calling Alexander the Great "the devil" will leave a punch mark in his name. sure the nickname cant be changed but who everysaid that that was his nick name everywhere??? In parts of Iran, and other countries that he had invaded, he is called "the killer" or "the terrorist". Isnt that just as bad as being called a Devil??

We do not call Alexander "The Devil" because it would cause needless confusion among devil worshippers.

Besides, once a nickname sticks, it is next to impossible to get rid of it. Look at Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain. He hated that nickname! Did it do him any good? No.

The best you're ever likely to acheive in this quixotic quest to rename Alexander might be if people started calling him 'Alexander the Ha Ha Great' or something like that. You know.
