Music in Lent

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

Well, Lent is just around the corner and I am in the prosess of preparing music.

I have two quick question:

1) I always forget this. Either Advent or Lent prohibits the use of instrumental music. (music with no singing). I ask every time Lent or Advent comes up, and yet I still forget. Is it Lent?

2) I am thinking of doing something really special for Lent. I was musing with the idea of finding some Gregorian Chant. I would either want to do a Gregorian Mass setting, or do it during the Communion hymn. First, do folks think this is a good idea? Two, should I do a Mass setting or the Communion hymn? Three, does anyone have a resource for finding some Gregorian Chant I could use?

Any music experts out there?

Go to www.ignatius.com. Ignatius Press has the one of the better readily available hymnals, the "Adoremus Hymnal." In it, besides finding all the good old hymns in Latin and English, there will be settings for the Mass in Latin/Gregorian chant. Some of these will be familiar to you, as parts of them are done, say, for the "Lord Have Mercy" (Kyrie) at many parishes.
