Friends and acquantainces

greenspun.com : LUSENET : History & Theory of Psychology : One Thread

I'm looking for a text a friend showed me many years ago. It was by a known psychologist, but I can't remember who. It defined a small number of classes of people based on how they make friends / acquantainces and how wide a circle of friends /acquantainces they have.

Thankyou.

You may be thinking of social network theory. One early collection in the field was

Leinhardt, S. (Ed.). (1977). Social networks: A developing paradigm. New York: Academic Press.

According to one encyclopedia article, the significance of friendships/social networks was first pointed out by Durkheim in his book Suicide (1897)
