Bush and the marriage palaver

i am trying to understand the moral stance of GWB on the gay marriage issue.

i appreciate that this may just be a very clever way of splitting the Democrat vote, but i would argue that he has a very odd basis for banning these marriages.

to illustrate, i submit that you need to understand the significance of "marriage" -- a joining together by God of 2 people that cannot be undone.

these gay marriages are, in the main, are not marriages. they are civil "rites" that have legal ramifications, but no effect whatsoever before God. the relevant individuals could presumably pool their assets in a private contract and get more or less the same result.

my point is this:

if San Francisco banned normal weddings before God, then there's an issue. Christians shpuld be allowed to marry before God.

but because San Francisco is just issuing certificates, as it does dog licences, who cares? they may have the word "marriage" written on them, but so what?

therefore, what is Bush trying to do?

confused.

Get the Bible Belt votes. After all, we don't vote for President directly, but electors. Southern states hold quite a lot of electoral votes.

Kerry and Edwards also oppose Gay marriages. Bush just took it away from them.

Elpidio

would you acceot, therefore, that there is no real moral angle to this.

all's i can see ia that if you prohibit this kind of activity, you might shelter those that would be adversely affected by it.

however, this is just a speck on the tip of the iceberg. is it really going to achieve anything.

if not, why on earth would anyone support the President/ changetheir vote to the President - other than on grounds of bigotry. the actual act has been illegal for long periods in many countries and it never stopped anything. it drove it underground, but that was all.

i think this has all the merit of a law that say that left handed people cannot scratch their nose on a Tuesday.
