Ian,

In Hebrew: God Yahweh is called not by his name among the superstitious people but Adonay (Lord) Elohim(Gods, but singular like God of Gods) Shem Tov. Shem is Name. Tov, Good. So only God can be good.

The people we call good (righteous) is Zedik. So Jesus was a righteous (Zadik) person. Greek: Dikaios.

Gen 15:6 And he believed [0539] 'aman in the LORD; [03068] Y@hovah and he counted [02803] chashab it to him for righteousness. [06666] ts@daqah

Now Matthew will make more sense to you: Righteousness (Goodness ) is Zedakah. In Greek: Dikaiosynes. Mat 5:6 Blessed [are] they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Mat 5:10 Blessed [are] they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Mat 21:32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen [it], repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

Even John , Acts, Paul, Peter,... discuss righteousness Jhn 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Act 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Rom 3:22 Even the righteousness of God [which is] by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

2Pe 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

So it is righteoussness befor God which will saves us:

-Not dogmas -Not believing that Jesus is God but that he is the righteous one, the son of Man who will show us the way to salvation. -Not the Eucharist -Not baptism -Not speaking in tongues -Not working miracles

NOW FOR THE RATIONAL APPROACH

"[18] And a certain ruler asked him, saying: Good master, what shall I do to possess everlasting life? [19] And Jesus said to him: Why dost thou call me good? None is good but God alone."

SO WHAT does that mean?

1/ hey guy, don't call me "good" cus i ain't "good"/ I ain't God

OR

2/ hey guy, what do you mean, are you saying that I am "good"?

either way, the evidence speaqks for itself: eg Our Lord in the wilderness with Satan. Spotless. Infallible.

I agree Ian..,

Jesus was making a major point when he asked, "Why do you call me good?"

Jesus was really asking in essence, "Do you know who I am?"

Undoubtedly many people, like the man in this verse, miss the implications of Jesus' reply--that the man was right in calling Jesus good because Jesus is truly God.
