When using eggs crack the shell at the end and rinse it out and put it back in the tray until its time to start seeds. Start your seeds in the shell. When you transplant the "eggplant" to the garden simply crack the shell so the roots can break through the membrane as they grow. Off course the shell will biodegrade into the garden soil.

That's a really great idea, Jay; especially for tomatoes, as the calcium in the shell should help ward off blossom end rot.

Alas, I never have any empty egg cartons to put them back in to - the people I give eggs to hardly ever bring them back!
