Response to what it an Auxiliary Bishop?

An auxiliary bishop is a second bishop in a diocese, who assists the primary bishop. Exactly what he does depends largely on the needs and preferences of the primary bishop, but typically they share many of the duties of a bishop in the diocese, both administrative and clerical. For example, they would likely split the parishes requiring Confirmation, and each provide the sacrament to certain parishes, when it might be impossible or difficult for the primary bishop to visit them all. Also, each bishop might take responsibility for particular programs or offices of the diocese.

The Aux normally succeeds the primary when the primary dies or retires, as well.

I am not sure if this is the case, we have an Aux who just celebrated his 25th aniversery of his episcopal ordination and our Archbishop has changed at least twice during his tenure. I don't know how its normally done though.

That's a coadjutor bishop.

I believe Paul M. is correct. As an example, I belong to the Sacramento diocese which has a large number of spanish speaking parishioners and spanish masses. Our Auxiliary Bishop in the Sacramento Diocese is hispanic. Since he speaks Spanish fluently, I believe that he visits parishes more frequently and attends events in the diocese more than the primary Bishop.
