a good website

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

hey,

I wanted to recommend a website (www.earlychristianwritings.com) with writings from ALL of early Christianity. This includes the Canon, Church Fathers, Gnostics, and heretics condemned by the Christian Church. The reason why the website is so beneficial is this: it shows how many writings were around, and why it took a Catholic Church Council in 393 and 397 to put the arguments to rest. There was a lot of stuff floating around at this time, and a lot of off-center heresies. It also is interesting to see the early Church Fathers amidst tons of heretical garbage.

Thanks Andrew I often struggle for sources like this beyond new advent.org

Kiwi,

No problem. Just a word of caution: be aware that this site has ALL the writings of 'Christians', but some at that early time were heretical and condemned by the Church. So, unless you stick with the Church Fathers as the Christians recognized, these were writings considered anathema by the Councils of Carthage and Hippo in 393 and 397. They are intersting to read, but I would stick to the Fathers and Scripture. Happy reading
