No one knows exactly what Bucephalus was. There is a lot of conjecture regarding the horses of the Greek world, and you have everyone from rab breeders to Akhal Teke breeders claiming Bucephalus, but the truth is that they are all guessing.. or trying a clever marketing ploy! The major 8 breeds of Greece were probably a mix of Iberian and Scythian blood, since we know that importations occurred. The famed Thessalian horses were probbaly more like the well-bred Pindos of today. The name "Oxhead" is noted as either referring to a brand or to a forehead mark on Bucephalus in the shape of an "oxhead". Soem speculation sttaes it may have been because he had a "large head", which would have been possible if there was Iberian influence in the bloodlines. The end result is, no one knows for certain.

Not sure but it was described as a very large horse, therefore most likely from Northern europe and not similar to the smaller Aegean or Arab breeds. In fact, the name itself means oxhead, denoting the largeness of the horse's head.
