What is European Hair?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

A local radio station (Dallas) that caters to a mostly black audience ran commercials for "European Hair". If a black woman adds european extensions to her hair, does this say something about what is inside her head? On the cover of the May issue of Ebony, Janet Jackson seems to have european hair? I had never noticed this before the commerical on radio.

I know that Black Hair (at least men's facial hair) is a flat ribbon, as opposed to European hair (which is a tube). This is what makes it so hard to shave with a conventional razor. They are designed for our white brethren.

Anything that any Jackson is doing these days does not warrant any energy pondering why....they're Jacksons....

this radio station was advertising to a black audience and the owner of the european hair facility is black.

I suppose if some white Hollywood actresses (Kim Bassinger, Angelina Jolie) place great value on full-thick lips, others will value the "straight-hair" thing. Hair salon owners are sheer capitalists and their primary motive is to maximize profits based on the preferences of their clients. Aesthetic enhancements (face, hair, nose upgrades) used to represent the conspicuous consumption of the bourgeoisie, now such activities are commonplace for even minimum wage workers. When I was young, selfish and filled with conceit and vanity, I used the "Sampson Effect" and kept my hair long so that good looking women would make favorable comments about the length and depth of my hair. Now that I'm older and a bit more mature I keep my hair cut real close to help eliminate the grey :-) QED

Pastor Paris,

So we have a section of our people who think that wearing someone else's hair makes them beautiful?

To answer the question: Like P.T. Barnum said, there's a sucker born every minute. How many billions of dollars have been made preying on people's insecurities?

IMHO, we should be happy with the cards God dealt us. Unlike some people, I have neither the time, money, or inclination to change the shape of my nose, hair, and/or skin color.

I got dealt a pair of 3's. Do I ask God for a new hand? No, because he might give me a busted flush. I take my 3's and bluff.

Sisters: You are beautiful. You do not need other people's hair on your head. You do not need other people's backsides or lips or eyes or cheekbones. Stand tall! Stand proud! Don't believe the hype!

Sounds to me like a lot of folk are out there singing the “Blues”. :-)

“Saint Louis woman wid her diamon' rings Pulls dat man 'roun' by her apron strings. “TWERN’T FOR POWDER AN’ HER STORE-BOUGHT HAIR De man she love wouldn't gone nowhere, nowhere"!

Perhaps some of us need to revisit these classic lines and think again of the natural beauty God has already given us.

Sisters and Brothers,

I don't why my brothers choose to patronize you. We all wish we had the natural beauty that is spoken of so eloquently by the philosopher. But truth is, if you ain't got no hair - get you some. If your front tooth is missin', get you one. It'll go along way for your self-esteem and keep all them philosopher brothers from doggin' you when your back is turned.

Many of the women that post to this board (or at least read it) put European extensions in their hair. Is it any different from women going once a month burning their scalp with lye relaxers that men just love, and when they miss a month or two they are called "nappy head". I used to get my blood pressure up about european hairdos but now I just realize it is just a passing fad. Next year, it will be something different. I think people just want to look like the people that are around them.

Has anyone other than me recently combed a nappy, fidgety, long- haired, tender-headed black girl's hair? Well, my 10 year old daughter fits that description and it's no fun fighting with her to sit still. I can't wait when she is old enough to get her "perm". Daddy has more important things to do with his time. A belated thanks to Madame C.J. Walker. QED
