Yo, It's Your Moderator SG2!! HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!

Hey...This is gonna sound REALLY stupid, but please stick with me.

My math teacher was being a total bitch today (Probably PMS or something). Well we have a test tomorrow and what we're doing is factoring. It's really simple for the most part, but I'm a total retard when it comes to math (I'm in a "special" math class for Christ Sakes!!), and I don't get it all. She kept yelling at me when I wasn't doing my work (I was drawing a new character from my Dragonball IGNO thingie), and I told her I was stumpted. SHE FRICKIN' THREW A TANTRUM AT ME!!!!!!!!!!!! Then I kinda yelled back at her and got myself in a lot of trouble...Like I do a lot...Well, that's not the point. I want someone to tell me how the Hell to do this problem I spent about 20 minutes on. And like I said I'm a retard at math so if it's really simple don't make fun of me. This is it:

7a2 - 11a + 4

I've done everything I could possibly figure out and I kept getting answers along the lines of (7a + 2) (a + 2), or (7a + 1) (a + 4), or even once, though I have no idea how the Hell I got it, I had (7a + 17) (a + 28)!! Can someone help me with this? And not just the answer can you give steps? And yes I know this is a stupid thread...BUT PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

YOU STILL HAV SCHOOL? HAHAHAHA!!! Anyways, wat does 7a2 - 11a + 4 =? . Does it equal 0? and is that '2' suppose to be squared (^2)? If its not goemetry or algebra, then I can't help u.

I think I mgith be able to help although im replying at 12midnight jsut before im goin to bed so you prolly wont read this in time (soz) but ill try to answer it anyway, I presume all you have to do is simplify it so 7a2 - 11a + 4 well do you mean 7a squared? or 7 times a times 2? i will work it out both ways, if it is 7 times a times 2 then it would be 14a - 11a + 4 and 14a - 11a = 3a then you add the 4 so you get 3a+4 and then thats it simplyfied really, but come to think of it, it wouldnt make sense for them to ask you 7 times a times 2 so its most likely you mean 7a squared so in that case it would be 7a times 7 a which is (gets out calculator :/) 49a^2 (49a squared) you may have thought it was just 49a but you have to multiply the a's aswell so it would be 'a' squared so its 49a sqaured not just 49a...so that would mean its 49a^2(just to remind you that means 49a sqaured) - 11a + 4 which is as far as it can be simplified down to cos you cant take away a's from a^2's sooooo... I hope all that answered you question :/

7a2 - 11a + 4 =0 Multiply 7 by 4 to get 28. Find which numbers will give you -11 when you add them up and multiply to get 28. 7a2 - 7a -4a + 4 =0

Sorry SG2 I have to go to class now. I'll be back later with the answer but hopefully these first steps can help you ^_^ Gomen!!

actually re-reading your post i looks like the type of question is to find what 'a' is in a quadratic formula so 7a^2 - 11a + 4 = 0 ,lets pretend its 7x^2 - 11a + 4 to make things simpler( it doesnt really matter though) and the 2 things you need to know to work it out are how to find the roots of it, the formula(type thing)is ax^2 + bx + c so in the equation (7x^2 - 11a + 4) a=7, b=11 and c=4 the next thing you need to know is the other formula for finding out what x is and once you find out the roots of the quadratic equation (what I just did) you can then use them to find out x, the formula is:

x = -b +- _/-(b^2 + 4ac) -------------------- 2a I dont have a squared root button on my keyboard so _/- means square root for now, also where is says +- it means pluss or minus, thats why there is 2 answeres like (x+2)(x-4)for example

so, x = -11+- _/-(11^2 + 4*7*4) ---------------------- 2*11

=-11+- _/-(121+112) ------------------ 22 =-11+- _/-(233) ------------- 22 so if you add then x = 1.2 and if you subtract then x = -0.2 so x=1.2,-0.2 so (x-1.2)(x+0.2)=0 and then if we change it back to 'a' which you originally used in the formula then (a-1.2)(a+0.2)=0 and hopfully I did that all correctly and thats the right answer, sorry its a bit late :S

If it is your intent to factor the equation, then the simplest answer would be: (7a - 4)(a - 1)

Gee it's so so far for me. 4 years and I forget all. But I think it's about factor the equation and Callbaugh has the good answer.

"SHE FRICKIN' THREW A TANTRUM AT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!" LOL, Btw, sue her ass. Use your amendment right and pleed for physical endangeredment and psychologcal abuse. Not familiar with American laws, but just a suggestion here ;)

dont you like collect all of the letters, into 8a*2-11+4=9a?

I needed to factor the equation, and yeah Callbaugh was right. But too bad I just got back from class (She moved the tes to today instead) and I'm pretty sure I failed. I wrote "Prime" for more than halp of the problems so yeah...I'm a total frickin' retard when it comes to math, and it totally sucks. I really hope I didn't fail the MCAS we took last week. I actually think I did pretty well, but with me you never know. Well thank you all for your help and I'm sorry I'm such a frickin' retard...But Arigatou Gozaimasu.

Hiya SG2 ^_^ Sorry I didn't reply sooner. It's just that I got piled with so much homework that I could get to my computer. Anyway this was in my previous post:

7a2 - 11a + 4 =0

Multiply 7 by 4 to get 28. Find which numbers will give you -11 when you add them up and multiply to get 28. Which is -4 and -7. Replace the -11 in the equation wth those numbers.

7a2 - 7a -4a + 4 =0

And now here's the rest of it:

7a2 - 7a - 4a + 4 = 0

Put the numbers in brackets so they look like this:

(7a2 - 7a) (-4a + 4) = 0

Then you take out the common factor out of both equations.

7a (a - 1) -4 (a - 1)

You should get (a - 1) in both brackets after you take out 7a and -4.

Finally you're left with;

(7a - 4)(a - 1) =0

If you're solving for zero then the other answers are 1 and 4/7.

P.S. I don't know the name of this method but it works ^_^
